Global Peace and Justice Auckland welcomes the Israeli decision to cease attacks on Palestinians because it will bring immediate relief to Gaza’s imprisoned population and an end to the killing in the meantime.
However,Mr. John Minto of GPJA said this ceasefire will simply be a prelude to more violence unless it is accompanied by a lifting of the siege if Gaza. It was the failure of Israel to lift the siege last year which led to the breakdown of the previous ceasefire.
He added the ceasefire will also be meaningless unless Israel withdraws from all its occupied territories and dismantles Jewish settlements on the West Bank. It is Israel’s 40-year failure to withdraw its troops as required by the United Nations Security Council which has led to a succession of middle-east wars.
"In the meantime GPJA will work to intensify the campaign to boycott Israel. Instead of simply reacting to Israel’s attacks we will campaign systematically to cut all New Zealand ties with representatives of Israel and impose a comprehensive boycott",He said
No doubt Foreign Minister Murray McCully will now emerge from hiding to welcome the decision. A more embarrassingly inept Foreign Minister would be hard to find in our recent history. The government needs to now impose sanctions on Israel which should include:
· The cutting of all diplomatic links with Israel
· Instructing Rakon Industries that it must cease the export of components for guided munitions used so murderously by Israel and
· Cancelling the visa free scheme for young Israelis coming to New Zealand
