Google: Commitment to Sustainable Computing

Google believed the they are operating the World's most efficient data centres in the world.

This was according to Annie Baxter, Google spokesperson for Australia and New Zealand.

Baxter told RePress that People use Google to search for information as quickly and efficiently as possible. But as computers become a bigger part of more people's lives, they do consume an increasing amount of energy, and Google takes this impact seriously.

" That's why we've designed and built the most energy efficient data centers in the world. Our data centers use considerably less energy for the servers themselves, and much less energy for cooling, than a typical data center", She said.

She added that the energy used per Google search is minimal. In fact, in the time it takes to do a Google search, your own personal computer will use more energy than we will use to answer your query.

Baxter said, Before the end of 2008 two of our facilities will run on 100% recycled water, and by 2010 we expect recycled water to provide 80% of our total water consumption.

She noted that Being "green" is essential to keeping our business competitive. It is this economic advantage that makes our efforts truly sustainable.

Earlier, A recent research by a Harvard University physicist that performing two Google searches from a desktop computer can generate about the same amount of carbon dioxide as boiling a kettle for a cup of tea.
