New Zealand has recorded its lowest annual road toll in 49 years, with provisional figures released today showing 359 people died on New Zealand roads last year. This is a decrease on the 421 deaths in 2007, and 393 deaths in 2006.
Ministry of Transport Land Transport Environment and Safety General Manager David Crawford said the result was a significant achievement, but there was still a need to be vigilant to achieve the Governments road safety targets.
Most of these deaths could have been prevented - serious road trauma is not inevitable. The lower road toll can be put down to a number of factors, including a period of higher petrol prices and an economic downturn.
