NEW ZEALAND Catholic Church apologized yesterday for Father Gerard Burns actions who splattered Israel former PM Yitzhak Rabin Peace Monument with red paint during a protest in Wellington.
Wellington Archbishop John Dew also distanced himself and the church from Father Burns, who he said was acting on his own initiative.
" I offer an apology for (his ) actions and make this apology to all those who were offended at the desecration of the Rabin monument",Archbishop Dew said.
On the other hand, Kiwi friends of Israel condemned the actions of Father Burns and calling for a full and unqualified apology from the priest in question.
The group said Father Burns should apologise for his behaviour and try to voice his political beliefs without vandalising memorials
As this developed, Police are considering filing charges against Father Burns after a complaint from former honorary Israel consul in NZ David Zwartz.
