Two hours and 31 minutes before the Obama Inauguration in Washington DC,Prime Minister John Key has written a letter to Barack Obama congratulating him on his inauguration as the United States' president.
In his letter, Mr Key said Obama's leadership would be "crucial" when facing the challenges ahead.
He also highlighted New Zealand's friendship with the United States.
"Our common democratic values and traditions, and long history of cooperating closely to promote international security and prosperity, point to our shared interests across a wide range of issues.
"We look forward to working with you in dealing with shared challenges including the current global economic crisis, the threat of international terrorism, climate change and the non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction."
Obama could count on New Zealand to be a good friend and partner, Mr Key wrote.
Meanwhile, opposition leader Phil Goff believes the new President has generated fresh hope.
He saids New Zealand is looking to President Obama for a fresh approach to resolving challenges such as global warming, the arms race and problems in the Middle East.
