Security alert at Beehive

A police cordon was placed around part of the Beehive after a security alert.

A white substance was found in an envelope by a member of the Prime Minister's staff on the 8th floor of the building around 11am Wednesday.

The floor, which houses Cabinet officials and some Prime Ministerial staff, was evacuated and the area isolated for it to be decontaminated.

The Prime Minister's office is on the ninth floor.

Emergency service staff in full chemical gear exited the building after about two hours with tarpaulins and towels believed to have been used to isolate the substance. They were decontaminated on parliament's forecourt.

Police are investigating the incident but are not commenting on the operation, referring all enquiries to the Prime Minister's office.
