The Maori Party may be given two ministerial portfolios outside cabinet in a National-led government. The party's co-leaders Tariana Turia and Pita Sharples held talks with Prime Minister-elect John Key this afternoon and an agreement document has been drafted.
Mr Key is remaining quiet on progress, but says there will be ministerial responsibility for Maori Party MPs, outside cabinet.
Mr Key says the basis of an agreement has been made, which the Maori Party has taken away for its hui. He says there should be a firm agreement on Sunday on whether they have been been able to come to an agreement.
Mrs Turia indicates the deal will likely see the Maori Party support National. She says they would not be talking if they were not leaning towards that. Mrs Turia adds that the future of the Maori seats is likely to be included in the arrangement.
Both Mrs Turia and Dr Sharples say there are indications within Maoridom that a relationship with National would be positive, but they are not saying if they will put the proposed agreement to Maori voters with their own personal endorsements. The two leaders are also careful about saying whether they are excited by the deal - Mrs Turia says they will know in three years whether they should have been.
Mr Key says discussions with ACT are also progressing.
