Maori Party hui shutting out Maori people

The Maori Party‘s reluctance to include all Maori as part of its consultation process with National is a very worrying sign, Maori Affairs Minister Parekura Horomia says.

"The Maori Party is shutting huge sections of the Maori community out of these hui with emails stating 'For Maori Party members only' and 'please pass this notice to your networks of Maori Party members'," Parekura Horomia said.

"This non-inclusive approach on what will be matters of significant importance to Maori is of concern, and is contrary to Pita Sharples' commitment before the election that all Maori would be invited to attend the hui. It also flies in the face of his comments yesterday that the Maori turnout during the election was worryingly low.

"The Maori Party should remember that more than six times more Maori voted for Labour than National and the Maori Party got less than 30 per cent of the party vote in the Maori seats compared to around 50 per cent for Labour.

"By locking non-Maori Party supporters out they cannot claim to be consulting the wider Maori community."
