NZers in Bangkok advised to avoid protests

New Zealand tourists stranded in Bangkok after anti-government protests should stay near other tourists, follow instructions by local authorities and avoid any protest activity, New Zealand Foreign Affairs officials say.

Thailand's main airport was closed after it was stormed by anti-government protesters yesterday.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (Mfat) said any New Zealanders caught up in the mayhem should contact family and friends in New Zealand to allay any concerns.

Overnight, four New Zealanders at the airport made contact with the New Zealand embassy in Thailand, said Mfat.

There were 561 New Zealanders who had registered with the ministry as being in Thailand.

New Zealanders may wish to defer their travel to Thailand if they can, said Mfat.

Travellers stranded at the airport should stay in the company of fellow tourists, avoid protest activity, remain close to relevant information counters and follow instructions issued by local authorities.

New Zealanders should avoid all political rallies, protests and demonstrations, as there was a risk of violence at such events, said Mfat.
