NZers warned against travel to Bali

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (Mfat) is warning New Zealanders against travelling to Bali while executions of the Bali bombers loom.

Three men are expected to go before a firing squad any time now over their lead roles in the 2002 nightclub bombings, which killed 202 people, including 88 Australians and three New Zealanders.

Mfat said travel to Bali was "high risk" and advised against all tourist and other non-essential travel.

"Further terrorist attacks like the Bali bombings of October 2005 (which killed 20 and injured over 100) and October 2002 (which killed 202), cannot be ruled out.

"The most likely targets are areas frequented by foreigners."

The Indonesian Government's announcement of the executions and the executions themselves could prompt strong reactions from their supporters, such as demonstrations and acts of violence, Mfat said.

It recommended New Zealanders in Indonesia monitor the news media and follow the advice of local authorities.

People should exercise a high degree of personal security awareness at all times and choose their destinations and activities carefully, Mfat said.

They should not attend demonstrations and avoid large crowds as they had the potential to turn violent.

The bombers, Imam Samudra, and brothers Amrozi and Mukhlas, have publicly called for their deaths to be avenged.

Indonesian authorities are on high alert for retaliatory attacks.
